KLANG – The Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) has taken a significant step toward professionalizing the sport by introducing a more structured and performance-driven player categorization model. The new initiative was formalized during a contract signing ceremony held at the Bayuemas Oval today.
The newly implemented system is designed not only to strengthen squad balance but also to foster a highly competitive environment, ensuring every national player remains at the peak of their performance.
Under this new framework, players are divided into specific categories with fixed monthly allowances as follows:
- Category A+: RM5,000
- Category A: RM3,000
- Category B: RM2,250
- Category C: RM1,500
- Rookie: RM1,000
For the men’s national squad, two elite players have been placed in the highest category (A+). Meanwhile, the women’s squad is bolstered by six players in Category A, supported by a strong pipeline of rookies and development players.
Beyond financial incentives, MCA has also introduced the National Player Handbook. This proactive measure sets high professional standards across several key areas, including:
- Professional conduct and player responsibilities.
- Media and communication guidelines (including social media).
- Integrity, discipline, and compliance with international standards.
- Player welfare and protection policies.
MCA President, Mahinda Vallipuram, emphasized that these initiatives reflect the association’s commitment to providing a clear career pathway and a professional environment for athletes to excel at the highest level.
National men’s captain, Syed Aziz Syed Mubarak, welcomed the move, stating that it provides much-needed clarity and motivation for the squad.
“We are grateful for the continuous support from MCA. This contract system and the player handbook provide us with the clarity to stay committed to representing Malaysia to the best of our abilities,” said Syed Aziz.
To ensure continuous growth, all contracts are subject to regular quarterly and biannual reviews, keeping player progression aligned with the evolving requirements of the national team.

“I never thought I’d enjoy training this much until joining Sportif. The coaches are supportive and really know how to bring out the best in you.”
