Malaysia’s national Under-16 (U-16) squad saw their 2026 ASEAN U17 Championship campaign end in heartbreak, finishing as runners-up after a 0-3 defeat to Vietnam in the final at the Gelora Delta Stadium, East Java.
The result marks a continued seven-year title drought for Malaysia, whose last triumph in this age group came back in 2019. Despite the defeat, the “Harimau Muda” contingent earned widespread praise for their spirited run throughout the tournament.
Vietnam, who had previously defeated Malaysia 4-0 in their Group A opener, wasted no time asserting dominance. They broke the deadlock in the 11th minute when Dao Quy Vuong capitalized on an early opening to put the visitors ahead.
Shukor Adan’s side attempted to fight back, relying on quick counter-attacks to breach the Vietnamese defense. Nur Azam Muslim Nor Hisham nearly found an equalizer with a powerful long-range strike, but the effort narrowly missed the target.
Vietnam doubled their lead during first-half stoppage time when Nguyen Van Duong pounced on a rebound after the ball struck the post, leaving the Malaysian defense with no time to react before the break.
The second half saw Vietnam effectively kill off the game in the 54th minute. Nguyen Van Duong secured his brace, finishing a well-placed cross from Tran Tri Dung to make it 3-0.
While Malaysia continued to search for a consolation goal and pushed forward with intensity, Vietnam’s disciplined defensive structure remained impenetrable until the final whistle.
Despite the “Harimau Muda” falling short of the trophy, the tournament is viewed as a significant developmental step for this young squad. Under the guidance of Shukor Adan, the team showed remarkable tactical growth and resilience to reach the final after an early group-stage setback.
The squad will now look to build on this experience as they prepare for upcoming continental qualifiers later this year.

“I never thought I’d enjoy training this much until joining Sportif. The coaches are supportive and really know how to bring out the best in you.”
