The Great Sub-2 Breakthrough: Sawe Shatters World Record in London

The “impossible” barrier in sports has officially fallen. Sabastian Sawe has become the first athlete to officially break the two-hour marathon mark in a competitive race, winning the 2026 London Marathon in a breathtaking 1:59:30.

By taking 65 seconds off the late Kelvin Kiptum’s previous world record, Sawe has shifted the landscape of long-distance running forever. While unofficial exhibition runs have neared this mark in the past, Sawe’s performance stands as the first-ever “legal” sub-two-hour marathon achieved in an open, sanctioned competition.

The race was defined by Sawe’s tactical brilliance and a perfect “negative split.” After a controlled start, Sawe accelerated to cover the second half of the race in an incredible 59:01—faster than his opening 13 miles.

He broke away from Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha in the final two kilometers, sprinting down The Mall to a standing ovation as the clock stayed under the elusive 2:00:00 mark.

The 2026 London Marathon proved to be the fastest race in history, with the top three finishers all remarkably finishing under the previous world record:

  • Sabastian Sawe (KEN): 1:59:30 (World Record)
  • Yomif Kejelcha (ETH): 1:59:41 (Fastest debut ever)
  • Jacob Kiplimo (UGA): 2:00:28 (Ugandan National Record)

The historic day wasn’t limited to the men’s field. Tigst Assefa successfully defended her title, clocking 2:15:41 to break her own women-only world record. For the first time in history, three women finished inside the 2:16 mark in the same race, cementing London 2026 as the greatest marathon event of the modern era.
