The Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) has officially approved a proposal to rename the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, to Velodrom Azizulhasni. The move serves as a tribute to Datuk Azizulhasni Awang for his monumental contributions to the nation’s cycling scene, particularly following his recent success in the UCI Track World Cup series.
MNCF President Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill noted that while the proposal received unanimous support from affiliates during the Annual General Meeting, final approval rests with the Federal Government. As the facility is a government-owned asset, the federation will bring the matter to the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) and the National Sports Council (NSC). The renaming process is expected to take between one to two years to finalize.
Avoiding Confusion at the Grassroots
The proposal, which was formally submitted by Khairy Jamaluddin in his capacity as Negeri Sembilan Cycling Association President, also addresses potential logistical issues. Currently, a grassroots development track in Dungun already bears the name Velodrom Azizulhasni Awang. If the Nilai facility is renamed, the Dungun track may be reverted to Velodrom Dungun to prevent international riders and officials from heading to the wrong venue during major competitions.
