Manchester City have officially been crowned the 2025/26 Barclays Women’s Super League champions, marking a historic shift in the landscape of English football. The title was secured on Wednesday night following Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion, a result that left City mathematically out of reach at the top of the table with a game to spare.

This victory ends a decade of waiting for the Manchester club, whose last league triumph came in 2016. In the years following that maiden success, Chelsea had established a firm grip on the trophy, winning six consecutive titles. However, under the leadership of Head Coach Andrée Jeglertz, City have displayed remarkable consistency, holding the top spot since early November. Jeglertz also makes history as only the second manager in the WSL era to win the league in his debut season.

City’s dominance is reflected in their league-leading statistics, boasting the best attacking record in the division with 58 goals. Their march to the title was fueled by a formidable 13-match winning streak between September and February, during which they dismantled rivals Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea at home. The team maintained a perfect 100% winning record at both the Joie and Etihad Stadiums throughout the campaign.

Reflecting on the achievement, Jeglertz expressed his pride in the squad’s development and their ability to overcome pressure.

“Helping guide this team to the WSL title is something I will never forget. The girls have met every challenge in front of them head-on and have been an absolute joy to coach this season. In the good moments and the bad, they’ve always stuck together and found a way to win—something that all great champions do,” he said.

The victory was also a deeply personal milestone for City captain Alex Greenwood, who highlighted the collective effort required to topple a dynasty.

 “Captaining this group of girls to the WSL title is one of the proudest moments of my career and an honour I will cherish forever. This success has come from ten months of hard work on and off the pitch. We’ve always believed we’re capable of winning the WSL, but it hasn’t been handed to us on a plate—it’s the result of an incredible team effort and bond that simply can’t be put into words,” Greenwood remarked.

While individual honors like Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw’s likely third-consecutive Golden Boot and Ayaka Yamashita’s pursuit of the Golden Glove highlight the squad’s talent, the focus remains on the future. As Jeglertz noted, this title is viewed as a beginning rather than a conclusion. “This isn’t the end of the road—we still have plenty to fight for this season and in the coming years. I’m excited by what the future holds for this amazing group of players and this fantastic club,” he added.
