In a significant blow to Malaysia’s medal hopes, professional stars Lee Zii Jia and Goh Jin Wei have failed to qualify for the 2026 BWF World Championships, set to take place in New Delhi, India, from August 17–23.
The eligibility list released by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) confirmed that Zii Jia will miss the prestigious tournament for the first time in six editions. The exclusion comes after a challenging period that saw his world ranking slip to No. 82 at the point of the qualifying deadline on April 27.
Men’s Singles Shift
With BWF regulations limiting nations to a maximum of two players if they are ranked between 25th and 150th, Malaysia’s slots have been awarded to Leong Jun Hao (World No. 25) and rising star Justin Hoh (World No. 44).
Despite a recent resurgence in form during an unbeaten Thomas Cup run in Horsens—which saw Zii Jia’s live ranking climb back to 65th—the improvement came too late to affect the official Phase 1 qualifying list. Even in the event of a withdrawal, Zii Jia remains unlikely to be called up, as higher-ranked compatriots Aidil Sholeh and Eogene Ewe sit ahead of him on the reserve list.
The National Contingent
In the women’s singles category, two-time world junior champion Goh Jin Wei also missed the cut after being ranked 53rd during the qualifying window. Malaysia will instead be represented by K. Letshanaa and debutant Wong Ling Ching.
Despite the absence of the high-profile independent duo, Malaysia still heads to India with a formidable 11-strong representative list:
- Men’s Doubles: World No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani.
- Women’s Doubles: Last year’s silver medalists Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and debutants Carmen Ting-Ong Xin Yee.
- Mixed Doubles: Defending champions Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and veteran pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai.
While the absence of the former All England champion Zii Jia and top female shuttler Jin Wei is a bitter pill for fans to swallow, the national squad remains optimistic about defending their mixed doubles crown and pushing for a first-ever women’s doubles gold in New Delhi.
