With this victory, the 54-year-old tactician has extended his record as the most successful manager in Europa League history, lifting the trophy an astonishing five times with four different clubs: Sevilla (3), Villarreal (1), and now Aston Villa.

Despite initial sluggishness from both sides in the opening 40 minutes, Emery’s game plan to bypass Freiburg’s aggressive press using direct aerial balls to Ollie Watkins eventually paid rich dividends.

The breakthrough came from a brilliantly engineered set-piece routine cooked up by specialist coach Austin MacPhee. Lucas Digne played a short corner to Morgan Rogers, who picked out a perfectly weighted cross to the edge of the penalty area. Youri Tielemans met the ball with a thudding, first-time volley that flew into the bottom left corner, leaving Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu completely stranded.

Villa doubled their lead in first-half injury time through a moment of individual magic. Collecting a pass from captain John McGinn on the edge of the left flank, Emi Buendía turned sharply before unleashing a phenomenal, curling effort with his weaker left foot into the far top corner.

Any hopes of a Freiburg comeback were definitively crushed midway through the second half. Buendía turned provider, accelerating down the left wing before flashing a precise low cross into the near post, allowing 23-year-old Morgan Rogers to calmly tap it home and round off a flawless 3-0 victory.

The victory holds profound emotional weight for the nucleus of the Villa squad. Captain John McGinn, alongside stalwarts like Tyrone Mings and Tammy Abraham, had spearheaded the club’s promotion from the Championship back in 2019. Speaking after the historic night, defender Matty Cash opened up about the surreal nature of the victory and the immense influence of their manager.

“It’s something that will stay with you forever—winning a medal and a cup, bringing it back to Villa Park, that parade,” Cash reflected. “We knew that we had to start well. The manager gave us a gameplan before the game, but to be fair, I thought we were quite comfortable. When we scored the first and then Emi’s second one, we just controlled the game, I think.”

“We’ve got that experience. We had the spell in the Champions League, we had the spell in the Conference League that didn’t quite go for us, but I think that experience has made us a better team in these nights. The togetherness is great.”

Praising Emery’s meticulous attention to detail, the defender added:

“So many little details that make a big difference. Those 1 per cents, if they add up, they can get to 50 per cent. That’s why we’ve been such a good team and, over the last few years, the difference that we are as a team when the manager has come in is massive.”
