The Malaysian national women’s cricket team has officially punched their ticket to the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, marking their fourth consecutive qualification for the prestigious tournament.
Finishing as runners-up following a nine-wicket defeat to regional powerhouse Thailand in the final of the Asian Games Twenty20 International (T20I) qualifier at the Bayuemas Oval in Klang, the world No. 28 Malaysian squad still celebrated achieving their ultimate tournament objective.
A Gritty Campaign
In the final clash, Malaysia struggled against Thailand’s bowling attack and was bowled out for 54 runs, with Mahirah Izzati Ismail being the sole batter to reach double digits with a hard-fought 18 runs. Thailand, ranked 12th in the world, comfortably chased down the target, scoring 56 for the loss of just one wicket in 10.4 overs.
However, Malaysia’s path to the runners-up finish was defined by a stunning bounce-back performance. After opening the tournament with a seven-wicket loss to the Thais, the team rallied to defeat Hong Kong by 34 runs.
The defining moment of their campaign came during Saturday’s semi-final. Entering the match as underdogs, Group A runners-up Malaysia pulled off a thrilling two-wicket upset over Group B winners Nepal.
The victory not only sealed their Asian Games berth but also served as sweet revenge for two international series defeats suffered against Nepal just a week prior. Nepal ultimately joined Thailand and Malaysia in qualifying after edging out China in the third-fourth place playoff.
Men’s Team Up Next
With the women’s team safely through to the Games, scheduled for September 19 to October 4, the spotlight now shifts to the Malaysian men’s national cricket team.
The men are set to launch their own qualification campaign at the Singapore National Cricket Ground, starting with an opening match against China, followed by a highly anticipated showdown against Nepal. They will be competing alongside three other nations for the remaining spots at the Asian Games.
