The Malaysian men’s national hockey team got their FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup campaign off to a flying start, securing a commanding 5-2 victory over Scotland in their Group A opener at the Hartleyvale Hockey Stadium on Thursday.
The emphatic win marks a perfect competitive debut for Malaysia’s newly appointed head coach, Brendon Carolan, who took charge of the world No. 14 squad in April.
The result also extends Malaysia’s flawless head-to-head record against the 17th-ranked Scots to four consecutive victories.
Early Aggression Sets the Tone
The Speedy Tigers wasted no time asserting their dominance, breaking the deadlock just four minutes into the match.
Forward Mohamad Akhimullah Anuar Esook fired home a clinical field goal to give Malaysia an early advantage, a moment he later noted served as a massive catalyst for the team.
“The early goal I scored motivated us to go all out to score more goals,” said Akhimullah, who was named Man of the Match. “We did well to take our chances.”
Malaysia doubled their lead in the 34th minute when striker Muhammad Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal successfully converted a penalty stroke.
Although Scotland’s Jamie Golden pulled one back for his side five minutes later via a penalty stroke of his own, the Malaysian offense refused to take their foot off the gas.
Speedy Tigers Seal the Opener
The national team firmly re-established control in the 42nd minute when Nik Muhammad Aiman Nik Rozemi slotted home a brilliant field goal.
Seven minutes later, Azrai Aizad struck again, converting a penalty corner to push the scoreline to 4-1.
Scotland threatened a late comeback when Andrew McConnell capitalized on a penalty corner in the 57th minute to make it 4-2.
However, Azrai Aizad capped off a spectacular individual performance by completing his hat-trick with a field goal just one minute before the final whistle, putting the game completely out of reach.
Eyes on Japan Next
Coach Carolan expressed satisfaction with the squad’s performance but shifted focus immediately to the upcoming fixtures.
“It’s a positive start,” Carolan said. “Now, we want to get the three points against Japan too.”
Malaysia will face world No. 15 Japan tomorrow in their second group match.
The Speedy Tigers are drawn in a highly competitive Group A alongside Scotland, Japan, South Korea, and defending champions New Zealand. Group B features France, Ireland, the United States, and host nation South Africa.

“I never thought I’d enjoy training this much until joining Sportif. The coaches are supportive and really know how to bring out the best in you.”
