Malaysian squash ace Mohammad Syafiq Kamal produced a masterclass in resilience, clawing back from the brink of defeat to capture the HCL-SRFI PSA Challenger Tour Mumbai title at the Juhu Gymkhana Club, Mumbai, India.

The spectacular victory not only seals the fifth PSA title of his career but officially ends a challenging seven-year trophy drought on the professional circuit.

It also stands as the biggest Tour title of his career to date, carrying a USD 15,000 prize purse.

The world No. 156 showed incredible mental fortitude in the men’s final against Egypt’s second seed and world No. 69, Yassin Shohdy.

Syafiq looked down and out after dropping the first two games, but engineered a stunning defensive masterclass to completely turn the match on its head, ultimately triumphing 6-11, 9-11, 11-8, 14-12, 11-8 in a 55-minute thriller.

The grueling final mirrored his semi-final escape, where he similarly bounced back from a game down to eliminate another tough Egyptian opponent, world No. 146 Ziad Ibrahim, in a 51-minute battle (2-11, 11-1, 8-11, 11-6, 11-6).

“I am quite emotional because it’s been a while since I won my last title,” an emotional Syafiq expressed after his win. “I am also happy that I will be representing Malaysia in the Asian Games this September. Always grateful to be part of the Games.”

With this championship run, Syafiq safely locks in his spot for the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, scheduled from September 19 to October 4, where he will look to upgrade the mixed doubles silver and men’s team bronze medals he won at the 2023 Hangzhou Games.

Meanwhile, the women’s crown stayed on home soil as India’s Tanvi Khanna pulled off an equally dramatic reverse-sweep in the women’s USD 15,000 category.

Khanna fought back from two games down to stun Egypt’s Farida Walid 8-11, 2-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-7, capping off an intense week of international squash in Mumbai.

For Malaysia, however, the weekend belongs to Syafiq Kamal, whose heroic turnaround proves he is hitting peak form just at the right time for national duty.
