Chelsea And Enzo Maresca Part Ways

SpeSpeculation over Enzo Maresca’s future at Stamford Bridge has finally been answered when the Italian-born manager officially left his position as Chelsea’s head coach.

Chelsea have informed the club and Maresca that they see a change of coach as key if they are to achieve their targets in four competitions this season.

“With the main objectives still open in four competitions including qualification for the UEFA Champions League (UCL), the club and Enzo believe that a change gives the team the opportunity to get back on track,” the club said in a statement.

Maresca is expected to receive a handsome compensation from Chelsea. This is because the former Leicester City manager still has the remainder of his contract until 2029.

During his time with Chelsea, Maresca helped the club win the UEFA Europa Conference League (UECL) and the Club World Cup.

A series of disappointing results in recent times was not the only factor contributing to Maresca’s departure.

The 45-year-old coach is also reported to be at odds with Chelsea management, especially in terms of the club’s direction.

Chelsea were seen losing patience when Maresca refused to fulfill his media commitments after the recent match against Bournemouth.

The former Sevilla midfielder has sent his assistant Willy Caballero as his replacement. When asked about Maresca’s absence, Caballero said the Italian coach was feeling unwell.

The situation has seen the Blues hoping to bring in Liam Rosenior as a long-term replacement. However, that will depend on his club Strasbourg finding a replacement.

The situation also opens up the possibility for Maresca to return to the Etihad Stadium to replace Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

Many fans expect the 2025/26 season to be the Spanish coach’s last at the Etihad Stadium. As a result, several names have been touted as potential successors.

Maresca is no stranger to the job, having previously been Guardiola’s assistant from 2022 to 2023. In addition to him, Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso has also been mentioned.
