The Malaysia Rugby Union (KRM) has officially announced the appointment of national rugby legend Dinesvaran Krishnan as the new Head Coach of the national men’s 15-a-side squad, the Bunga Raya 15s.

This appointment marks the beginning of a highly anticipated new phase in the development of the nation’s rugby landscape.

Dinesvaran, affectionately known as “Dugro” among local fans, is a household name in the sport.

As a former national captain and player with an esteemed reputation, he is a pivotal figure who has elevated Malaysian rugby on the global stage.

From the International Pitch to the Coaching Bench

KRM’s move to bring back Dugro’s expertise is seen as a highly strategic decision.

The towering lock made history as the first Malaysian to play in the United States’ Major League Rugby (MLR) with the Chicago Hounds. Prior to his stint in the US, he also spent nine seasons competing in Japan’s professional leagues across two different clubs.

It is this extensive experience under professional international structures that is expected to inject a fresh dimension and work ethic into the national camp.

KRM expressed ultimate confidence that Dugro’s high profile and top-tier tactical understanding will help build a squad that is more disciplined, competitive, and impactful on the international stage.

First Mission in Bangkok: The Union Cup 2026 Litmus Test

According to KRM’s official media statement, Dugro will not have a long honeymoon period. His first assignment is a demanding one: leading the Bunga Raya 15s squad into the 2026 SEARF Men’s XV Championship – Union Cup, scheduled to take place on July 12, 15, and 18, 2026, in Bangkok, Thailand.

The prestigious tournament in the Thai capital will bring together eight (8) national teams from across the Southeast Asian region.

It is expected to be a fiercely competitive battleground as Malaysia aims to elevate its performance and improve its regional ranking.

To prepare the best possible squad, a centralized training camp is currently underway from July 1 to 9, 2026, at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjung Malim, Perak, before the team departs for Thailand on July 10.

Notably, the players called up for this challenge were meticulously selected based on their recent performances during the 42nd Edition of the Agong Cup Rugby Championship 2026.

“No More Big Fish in a Small Pond” — High Ambitions for the New Captain

Speaking on the heavy responsibility, Dugro admitted that the offer to helm the national team had actually been extended to him last year, but time constraints forced him to delay it until now.

“I accepted the position this year because I want to challenge myself at the highest level. No more being a big fish in a small pond (Cukuplah jadi jaguh kampung). For these first six months, I will be leading the team into two tournaments—one in Bangkok and the other being the Asia Rugby Championship. I am calling up all the players to build this from the ground up. Six months is a good window to show Key Performance Indicators (KPIs),” Dugro shared passionately.

This initial six-month phase will serve as a crucial benchmark for him. Following the assignment in Bangkok, the 38-year-old tactician’s focus will shift toward preparing for the Asia Rugby Championship.

Driven by a vision to rebuild the squad from the grassroots up and implement modern gameplay, Dinesvaran “Dugro” Krishnan’s presence on the coaching bench is set to mature the nation’s rugby structure for long-term sustainability.
