Selangor FC’s ambitions of being crowned the absolute rulers of Southeast Asian club football were dashed as Thai powerhouse Buriram United FC successfully defended their ASEAN Club Championship Shopee Cup crown. A gritty 2-1 come-from-behind second-leg victory at the Chang Arena secured a 3-1 aggregate triumph for the hosts.

The “Red Giants,” managed by former Malaysian national strategist Kim Pan-gon, entered the lions’ den trailing 0-1 from last week’s opening battle in Petaling Jaya. Played out in front of a roaring, full-capacity crowd of 30,889 spectators, Selangor showed immense attacking intent early on, constantly asking questions of the hosts’ veteran star goalkeeper, Neil Etheridge.

An early combination saw skipper Faisal Halim force Etheridge into an agile save after being slipped through by Chrigor Moraes, before midfielder Nooa Laine had his close-range effort pushed away from danger.

A Speculative Opener and Swift Thai Response

Selangor’s aggressive tactical press paid off brilliantly in the 18th minute when Syahir Bashah unleashed a long-range effort from distance. Etheridge misread the flight of the speculative strike, letting the ball squirm underneath his body and slip over the goal line to sensationally tie the aggregate score at 1-1.

Selangor safely guarded that fragile advantage moments later when veteran defender Safuwan Baharudin threw himself bodily in front of a blistering shot from Guilherme Bissoli.

The lethal Suphanat Mueanta—who scored the only goal in the first leg—latched onto the ball on the run, steering it past goalkeeper Sikh Izhan Nazrel with the outside of his boot to make it 1-1 on the night and restore Buriram’s aggregate lead.

A Volley of Genius from Theerathon

Selangor once again flew out of the blocks right after the halftime interval. Etheridge was forced to make amends for his earlier error, denying a fierce cross-shot from Vitor Pernambuco and pulling off an exceptional reflex save to tip a curling centre away as Chrigor rushed the goalmouth.

The defining, title-clinching moment arrived in the 55th minute courtesy of pure footballing magic from the eventual Shopee Star of the Match, Theerathon Bunmathan.

A Peter Žulj corner was headed clear to the edge of the 18-yard box, where the 35-year-old maestro steadied himself and caressed a spectacular, first-time left-foot looping volley. The ball sailed past a helpless Sikh Izhan and bounced emphatically in off the underside of the crossbar to put the hosts 2-1 ahead.

Buriram standard-bearer Kingsley Schindler later rattled the woodwork as the hosts hunted for a third, while Etheridge executed a stunning flying save to tip a powerful Chrigor header onto the crossbar.

Theerathon’s stellar night did end on an unsavoury note when he was shown a straight red card deep in injury time for retaliation—literally a single second before the final whistle. It proved to be a minor blemish, however, as the 2-1 scoreline stood firm.

Despite the agonizing heartbreak, Selangor winger Faisal Halim remained proud of the Red Giants’ explosive opening performance:

“We tried our best, we gave our all. The first 25 minutes, we controlled the match and created chances and got the goal. After we conceded the goals, it was hard for us to find the momentum to push forward. This is a great experience for our team, we gave our best. Getting to this point is a great recognition and we’ll keep working hard for the future.”

Double Agony for the Red Giants

The defeat inflicts a massive double blow onto Selangor FC’s immediate future. Beyond missing out on the historical Shopee Cup trophy, the result officially terminates the club’s path to competing in international tournaments next season, as they previously finished their domestic Super League campaign in 3rd place.

Meanwhile, Mark Jackson’s Buriram United have cemented their absolute dynasty, backing up their inaugural championship triumph over Công An Hà Nội last season to firmly establish themselves as the undisputed kings of Southeast Asian football.
