National youth sprinter Danish Iftikhar Muhammad Roslee endured a tough outing at the Asian Under-20 Athletics Championships in Hong Kong, crossing the finish line in sixth place in the men’s 200 meters (m) final on Saturday.

The 19-year-old Johor-born athlete clocked a time of 21.32 seconds (s) at the Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground, a performance that fell considerably short of the blistering standard he established on the regional stage late last year.

Struggling to Replicate Peak Form

Danish’s final time was well off his standing national record of 20.73s, which he sensationally clocked just six months ago to capture the bronze medal at the 2025 SEA Games in Bangkok, Thailand last December.

Signs of a challenging weekend for the young speedster emerged during the semi-final rounds, where he posted a 21.27s to place fifth in his heat to narrowly secure his spot in the final.

Meanwhile, it was a tough outing for Malaysia’s second representative in the discipline, Sayyid Amin Roslan. Sayyid missed out on the final altogether after posting a time of 21.85s, finishing eighth and last in his respective semi-final race.

UAE Sprinter Snatches Continental Gold

The continental crown went to the United Arab Emirates, as Abdul Quddus Ahmed Ali powered down the straight to clinch the gold medal in a time of 20.85s.

He was flanked on the podium by China’s Chen Jinxin, who secured the silver medal in 21.12s, and Sri Lanka’s Sadew Wimansa Rajakaruna Senarath Mudiyanseiage, who claimed a close bronze just a fraction behind in 21.13s.

The four-day Asian Under-20 Athletics Championships, which got underway on Thursday, will officially draw to a close tomorrow. Despite missing out on the podium in Hong Kong, Danish remains one of the nation’s brightest prospects as he looks to regroup and rebuild his form toward future international assignments.
