Malaysia’s hopes for a home celebration in the men’s doubles category were dashed on Sunday as professional duo Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani suffered a straight-games defeat to Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard in the final of the Malaysia Masters.
The world No. 9 Malaysian pair, who were bidding to ensure the home nation retained dominance in the men’s doubles category at Bukit Jalil, were outmanoeuvred 21-16, 21-17 by the world No. 18 Danes in a 42-minute clash at the Unifi Arena.
The defeat marks a bittersweet repeat of history for Sze Fei and Izzuddin, who previously finished as runners-up at this tournament back in 2017 during the Grand Prix Gold era.
The match began on shaky ground for the home favorites, as Lundgaard and Vestergaard blitzed ahead to a commanding 7-0 lead in the opening game.
Dealt an early blow, Sze Fei and Izzuddin showed immense grit to claw their way back, winning six consecutive points and eventually taking their first lead of the match at 11-10.
However, their rhythm faltered late in the game, allowing the clinical Danish pair to string together a series of precise attacks and seal the first set 21-16.
The script flipped early in the second game, with the Malaysians looking far more assured as they raced to an encouraging 9-4 advantage.
Yet, the relentless Danish duo refused to back down, chipping away at the deficit until they leveled the score at 12-12.
With the momentum firmly shifting away from the hosts, Sze Fei and Izzuddin fell behind 15-18 before the Danes emphatically closed out the match 21-17.
The result mirrors a fiercely contested rivalry, with the head-to-head record between both pairs now deadlocked at 3-3.
It also serves as sweet revenge for the Danish tandem, who had been soundly beaten in straight games by Sze Fei and Izzuddin in the semi-finals of the Indonesia Masters back in January.
For their spectacular title run, Lundgaard and Vestergaard pocketed the grand prize of $39,500 (approx. RM156,000), while Sze Fei and Izzuddin took home $19,000 (approx. RM75,000) for their podium finish.
