Max Verstappen Set for Historic Nürburgring 24 Hours Debut Amid F1 Uncertainty

Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen is set to make his highly anticipated debut at the legendary Nürburgring 24 Hours this weekend, marking one of the most talked-about crossovers in modern motorsport.

The Dutch driver will compete in the prestigious endurance race aboard a Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo under the Verstappen Racing banner, alongside experienced GT specialists Dani Juncadella, Jules Gounon and Lucas Auer.

Verstappen’s participation has already made history even before the race begins, with the event officially selling out for the first time ever as fans flock to witness the Formula 1 superstar tackle the fearsome Nordschleife.

Chasing “Real Motorsport”

Verstappen has openly admitted that racing at the Nürburgring has been a long-time dream. The 15.7-mile circuit, famous for its 170 corners, blind crests and unforgiving layout through Germany’s Eifel mountains, is widely regarded as one of the toughest tracks in the world.

Speaking earlier this year, Verstappen described the Nordschleife as “what real motorsport is like,” adding that the experience gives him the enjoyment and excitement he feels modern Formula 1 has gradually lost.

The Red Bull driver has spent years mastering the circuit through sim racing, completing thousands of virtual laps before finally pursuing a real-life entry. However, despite his F1 status, Verstappen still had to complete the demanding licensing process required to race at the Nürburgring, including classroom exams, test sessions and lower-category races before earning permission to compete in the top GT3 class.

Why Red Bull Allowed It

Red Bull’s decision to allow Verstappen to compete in such a dangerous race surprised many, but the team reportedly understood how important the event was to their star driver.

Former Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko previously revealed that Verstappen’s Nürburgring programme helped reignite his passion for racing during a difficult 2025 Formula 1 campaign.

Verstappen’s outings in GT racing reportedly made him happier behind the wheel and even contributed to improvements in his F1 performances. Red Bull has fully backed the programme, with its branding prominently featured on Verstappen Racing’s Mercedes-AMG GT3.

Why Verstappen Is Racing a Mercedes

Despite his ties to Red Bull, Verstappen opted to race a Mercedes-AMG GT3 due to the opportunities and strong working relationship available through Mercedes-AMG Motorsport and Winward Racing.

The car will be operated by the experienced Winward Racing squad, with Verstappen believing the partnership shares the same competitive mindset and preparation philosophy.

Can Verstappen Win?

Although the Nürburgring 24 Hours is notoriously unpredictable, Verstappen Racing enters the event as one of the favourites.

The team has already shown impressive pace during Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) races this season. Verstappen, Juncadella and Gounon even crossed the line first in one race before being disqualified due to a tyre regulation infringement.

Still, the race remains one of the most dangerous and chaotic events in motorsport, with mechanical failures, changing weather and heavy traffic often deciding the outcome more than outright speed.

Verstappen himself acknowledged the challenge ahead, admitting the level of competition in GT racing is extremely high and that Balance of Performance regulations could play a crucial role in determining the final result.

Growing Questions Over Verstappen’s F1 Future

Verstappen’s growing passion for endurance racing has also intensified speculation surrounding his Formula 1 future.

The reigning world champion has repeatedly criticised Formula 1’s new regulations, describing the latest generation of cars as “anti-racing” and comparing them to “Mario Kart” due to the heavy emphasis on battery management.

Sources suggest Verstappen could potentially activate performance-related exit clauses later this season if Red Bull’s struggles continue, while the possibility of a temporary sabbatical from Formula 1 has also been discussed.

For now, though, Verstappen’s focus is firmly on conquering one of motorsport’s greatest challenges — the Nürburgring 24 Hours — in what could become another defining chapter of his racing career.

A Sold-Out Phenomenon

The organizers confirmed that weekend tickets are completely gone, a testament to Verstappen’s global drawing power. For fans, it’s a rare chance to see a modern F1 great tackle the world’s most dangerous circuit in a GT car—ironically, one built by Red Bull’s primary F1 rival, Mercedes.
