Negeri Sembilan’s women’s hockey team delivered a tactically disciplined masterclass to claim the Charity Shield in the opening match of the 2026 Malaysian Women’s Hockey League (MWHL) season. The “Lady Jangs” defeated Malaysia University (MU-UNITEN) 4-0 at the Seremban 2 Hockey Stadium on Tuesday.
The result reflected the home side’s structured approach and clinical execution, capitalising on key moments to dismantle a formidable opponent.
Fielding a powerhouse squad strengthened by six national players and two experienced imports, Negeri Sembilan adopted an aggressive press from the opening whistle. The breakthrough came early in the sixth minute when Fatin Shafika Mohd. Shukri successfully converted a penalty corner, silencing the visitors and giving the hosts a vital early advantage.
This early lead allowed Shaiful Azli Abd Rahman’s side to dictate the tempo. While Malaysia University attempted to mount a comeback in the second and third quarters, Negeri Sembilan’s disciplined defensive structure effectively neutralised any attacking threats, keeping the scoreline 1-0 heading into the final frame.
Negeri Sembilan increased the intensity in the fourth quarter, utilizing quick passing and wider attacking channels to stretch the MU defense. The pressure told in the 50th minute when Nur Afiqah Syahzani Azhar doubled the lead.
The momentum remained firmly with the home side as Fatin Shafika added her second of the match in the 54th minute, once again proving lethal from a penalty corner. As the match reached its final stages, Siti Nur Arfah Mohd. Nor converted yet another penalty corner at the 60-minute mark to seal the comprehensive 4-0 victory.
Team captain Noor Hasliza Md. Ali credited the win to the team’s adherence to tactical instructions. Despite Malaysia University fielding a lineup of national-level talent, Hasliza praised her teammates for their unwavering focus.
“We emphasised controlling critical areas near the goal and maintaining concentration at all times. Winning the Charity Shield and securing our first three points is a massive morale boost,” Hasliza said following the trophy presentation by Negeri Sembilan Hockey Association vice-president, N. Logendran.
With this dominant win, Negeri Sembilan moves to the top of the MWHL table, signaling a clear intent to sweep the league titles this season.
