PSG Secure Fifth Consecutive Ligue 1 Title with Decisive Win Over Rivals Lens

Paris Saint-Germain have officially cemented their domestic dominance once again, securing their fifth straight French Ligue 1 title following a 2-0 victory over their nearest challengers, Lens, at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis on Wednesday.

The win gives Luis Enrique’s side an unassailable nine-point lead at the top of the table with only one match remaining in the season.

The breakthrough came just before the half-hour mark when Ousmane Dembele, recently crowned Ligue 1 Player of the Year, intercepted a clearance and released Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The Georgian international made no mistake, firing home his 19th goal of the season from point-blank range to give the visitors the lead.

Despite a spirited second-half response from Lens, including a strike from Abdallah Sima that hit the post and a disallowed goal from Florian Thauvin, PSG sealed the result in stoppage time through a clinical counter-attack finished by teenage substitute Ibrahim Mbaye.

The championship marks a record-extending 14th French title for PSG, with 12 of those coming in the last 14 years. This latest triumph adds to an already glittering season for the Parisians, who have already secured the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Intercontinental Cup, and the French Champions Trophy.

Reflecting on the achievement and the challenges ahead, last year’s Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele told beIN Sports, “We wanted to come here and win, but we especially want to prepare for the final on May 30. We have one more game to come on Sunday. We will celebrate this because it’s official now, we are champions.”

While the defeat was a disappointment for Lens, the northern side has reason to celebrate as they are now guaranteed a second-place finish, securing their return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2023/24 campaign. They also look forward to the French Cup final against Nice on May 22.

For PSG, the focus now shifts toward a historic opportunity on the European stage. As the defending European champions, they are set to face Arsenal in the Champions League final in Budapest on May 30.

A victory would see them become only the second team in the modern era to win back-to-back European Cups, potentially completing a legendary campaign for the Qatari-owned club.
