Qatari Elite Officials Appointed for Historic 2025/2026 Malaysia Cup Final

In a significant move to ensure flawless officiating on the grandest domestic stage, high-profile match officials from Qatar have been officially appointed to handle this Saturday’s highly anticipated 2025/2026 Malaysia Cup final between defending champions Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) and Kuching City FC at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) confirmed the foreign appointments today, following a formal request from the Malaysian Football League (MFL) to bring in top-tier refereeing expertise for the showpiece match. The strategic decision is aimed at maintaining the highest standards of neutrality and quality, particularly following a domestic season filled with intense refereeing debates.

The four-man officiating team from West Asia brings a wealth of international experience to the country’s oldest football tournament.

The crew will be led by referee Mohammed Ahmed Al-Shammari. He will be flanked on the sidelines by assistant referees Yousuf Aref Al-Shamari and Khaled Aiad Khalaf, while Meshari Ali Alshamari will assume duties as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Every member of the selected crew holds badges as a FIFA International Referee and enjoys Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Elite status. They are well-acquainted with high-octane pressure cooker environments, having previously officiated high-profile matches including the FIFA Under-17 World Cup and the prestigious Qatar Emir Cup Final.

Bringing in foreign whistleblowers for showpiece domestic finals is a rare but calculated move for Malaysian football. FAM previously utilized overseas expertise during the 2019 FA Cup final between Perak and Kedah at the same venue, an encounter handled by a trio of Japanese officials led by Takuto Okabe.

As the 99th edition of the tournament reaches its thrilling climax, FAM reiterated its unwavering commitment to elevating the organizational standards of the nation’s premium cup competition.

“The Malaysia Cup final has always been the pinnacle of domestic football,” FAM said in an official statement. “FAM are dedicated to ensuring every aspect, including refereeing, meets the reputation of Malaysia’s oldest and most prestigious tournament.”

With nearly 100 years of history on the line, the introduction of the Qatari elite unit sets the stage for a fair, world-class showdown as underdogs Kuching City FC look to pull off an upset against the reigning titans of JDT.
