World No. 5, Sivasangari Subramaniam came agonizingly close to a historic breakthrough at the CIB Palm Hills PSA World Championships, falling just short in a 93-minute marathon against world number one Hania El Hammamy.
In a high-stakes quarter-final clash that lived up to its billing, the world number five showcased the form that has made her a global threat. Sivasangari took the fight to the top seed from the opening serve, claiming the first set 11-9 and later battling back to lead 2-1 after a grueling 12-10 tie-break in the third.
However, the relentless El Hammamy, backed by a passionate home crowd in Giza, demonstrated why she remains the tournament favorite.
The Egyptian, a finalist in Chicago last year, regained her composure to sweep the fourth set before edging out a tense decider to secure a 3-2 victory.
Match Result: [1] Hania El Hammamy (EGY) bt. [5] Sivasangari Subramaniam (MAS) 3-2: 9-11, 12-10, 10-12, 11-5, 11-8 (93m)
Sivasangari had entered the tournament with high hopes of becoming the first Malaysian to reach the world championship semi-finals since Datuk Nicol David accomplished the feat back in 2013.
Despite the defeat, her performance—under the guidance of national coach Ajaz Azmat and former world champion Gregory Gaultier—proved she is firmly established among the sport’s elite.
While El Hammamy extends her head-to-head record to 8-2, the sheer intensity of the 93-minute encounter serves as a testament to Sivasangari’s rapid ascent.
Having already beaten the world number one twice in previous meetings, the Malaysian star leaves Egypt with her reputation further enhanced, even if the semi-final milestone remains elusive for now.

“I never thought I’d enjoy training this much until joining Sportif. The coaches are supportive and really know how to bring out the best in you.”
