The local tennis landscape is bracing for its most competitive showcase of the year as the CIMB Kuala Lumpur Open Tennis Championship 2026 prepares to return to the National Tennis Centre at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim. 

Scheduled to run from July 28 to August 2, 2026, the tournament has officially solidified its status as one of the most lucrative events on the National Circuit organized by Tennis Malaysia.

This year’s edition raises the stakes considerably by bumping the total cash prize pool to RM80,000++, up from RM72,000 last year. 

In addition to the massive financial incentives, apparel and footwear giant Fila has committed an additional RM15,650 worth of vouchers for the competing field, pushing the tournament’s overall rewards to new heights.

Kuala Lumpur Lawn Tennis Association (Tennis KL) President Mirzan Mahathir highlighted that the event retains its unique appeal by offering eight distinct categories. 

Alongside the standard Men’s and Women’s Singles and Doubles, the competition accommodates older segments of the tennis community through the Men’s Masters 35+ and Men’s Veteran 50+ brackets—divisions rarely integrated into standard national circuits.

Over 200 players from across the Southeast Asian region are expected to descend upon the capital city, transforming the tournament into a true international proving ground. 

The influx of talent has drastically intensified the outlook for domestic athletes.

Among the chief favorites for the Men’s Singles crown is 19-year-old Malaysian sensation Darrshan Suresh Kumar. 

The 2024 champion missed his title defense last year after moving to the United States to study and play collegiate tennis for the University of North Dakota. 

Back home for his summer holidays, Darrshan remains grounded about his chances against a stacked regional field.

The road to the title is littered with formidable hurdles. Defending champion Naufal Karamuzzaman, veteran player Koay Hao Sheng, and rising star Imran Daniel Hazli are all locked in for the men’s tournament, with Mitsuki Leong potentially joining the fray. 

The international flavor is further sweetened by participants from Indonesia, Thailand, South Korea, and the Philippines, the latter of whom actively requested wildcard entries due to the high competitive pedigree of past editions. 

On the women’s side, defending champion Elsa Wan Rahman and top national athlete Daania Daniella Hazli are heavily tipped as frontrunners for the singles crown.

The Ultimate SUKMA Warm-Up Stage

Beyond the immediate glory of the KL Open trophy, the six-day event serves as a critical strategic platform. 

Local tennis officials view the tournament as the ideal high-stakes warm-up stage ahead of the 22nd SUKMA Games in Selangor, scheduled for August 15–24.

Tennis KL took the opportunity at the pre-tournament press conference to unveil their state squad for the upcoming Selangor Games, openly targeting an improvement over the two gold medals captured at the 2024 Sarawak edition. 

Darrshan Suresh and Imran Hazli will spearhead the capital’s men’s contingent alongside Gareth Lim, Aqil Rahiman, Jake Hou, and Caeus Tan. Meanwhile, Imran’s sister, Daania, will anchor the women’s roster flanked by Nao Phang, Eleena Manoj, Claudia Tan, and Haydee Loi.

Nurturing the Next Generation and Strengthening Partnerships

In a bid to expand the sport’s baseline reach, Tennis KL is also launching the inaugural ShekhinahPR Junior Invitational Mixed Doubles Tennis Championship (Under-14) alongside the main draw. 

Marking its 15th anniversary, sports public relations and branding agency ShekhinahPR has stepped forward with a RM15,000 sponsorship package to fund the junior tournament.

The multi-layered tournament is heavily supported by a coalition of public and private bodies. Beyond title sponsors CIMB Bank Berhad, whose community pillars emphasize nurturing homegrown, high-potential talent, the tournament features backing from the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) via the Sports Matching Grant (GPS), Malaysia Stadium Corporation as the venue partner, Dunlop Sports as the official ball supplier, and the PCM Group providing official vehicles.
