ASN 2025: Tang Jie, Ee Wei, Yusof Hafizi & Carmen Lim Top Star-Studded National Sports Awards Roll of Honour

Badminton mixed doubles sensations Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei etched their names into the history books at the National Sports Awards (ASN) 2025, becoming the first-ever duo from a mixed discipline to sweep the prestigious Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year accolades.

The glittering ceremony, which celebrates the absolute pinnacle of Malaysian sporting excellence, was graced by Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who presented the night’s four major honours. Each individual winner walked away with a perpetual trophy, an award plaque, and a RM20,000 cash prize.

Tang Jie secured the National Sportsman of the Year crown after beating out a highly competitive shortlist that included Si Shin Peng (wushu), Muhammad Rafiq Ismail (tenpin bowling), Muhammad Khairi Abib Azhar (pencak silat), and Abdul Aziz Ahmad (bodybuilding). Meanwhile, his powerhouse partner Ee Wei clinched the National Sportswoman of the Year title, edging out world champion bowler Natasha Mohamed Roslan, lawn bowler Emma Firyana Saroji, and wushu exponents Tan Cheong Min and Pang Pui Yee.

The para-sports categories witnessed equally historic milestones. Track cyclist Mohammad Yusof Hafizi Shaharuddin was named National Para Sportsman of the Year following his groundbreaking achievement as the country’s first-ever para-cycling world champion, winning the MC1 200m sprint title at the 2025 World Para Track Cycling Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Joining him on the pedestal was para-swimmer Lim Carmen, who was rightfully crowned National Para Sportswoman of the Year after an outstanding, dominant medal haul at the 2025 ASEAN Para Games.

It was also a monumental night for sepak takraw. The national sepak takraw squad was celebrated as the National Men’s Team of the Year, while head coach Ahmad Jais Baharun took home the National Men’s Coach of the Year award. To round off their federation’s successful night, Malaysia Sepak Takraw Association (PSM) President Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan was honoured with the Sports Leadership Award.

In the women’s team discipline, the national wushu trio of Tan Cheong Min, Pang Pui Yee, and Lee Jia Rong scooped the National Women’s Team of the Year award for their brilliant Duilian performance, while pencak silat’s Nor Hamizah Abu Hassan was named National Women’s Coach of the Year.

A touching Special Award was posthumously presented to the late Datuk Hishamuddin Aun, the former Group Editor-in-Chief of The New Straits Times and sports editor for Berita Harian, recognizing his immense lifelong contributions to Malaysian sports journalism. Local grassroots institution Ikan Bilis Swimming Club and corporate giant Petronas were also feted with Special Awards for their sustained devotion to national sports development.
