Shelton has become the first American man to capture a clay-court title above the ATP 250 level since the legendary Andre Agassi last achieved the feat in 2003. This victory ends a 23-year wait for an American player to reclaim dominance on European red clay.
Starting the match with immense confidence, Shelton broke Flavio Cobolli’s early service game to cruise through the opening set 6-2. However, the second set saw a much fiercer challenge from the fourth-seeded Italian.
