Funding Crisis: Malaysia Cup Squash Cancelled for the 2025/2026 Season

The national squash arena has been dealt a major blow as the Malaysia Cup for the 2025/2026 season has been officially cancelled. Severe financial constraints have been identified as the primary reason the tournament cannot proceed as planned.

The organizers reportedly failed to secure the RM1.5 million in funding required to ensure the tournament could run smoothly between August 2025 and June 2026.

A Future Vision: Upgrading to Gold Level

Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) President, Gerard Monteiro, confirmed the cancellation but offered a glimmer of hope by revealing plans to bring the Malaysia Cup back late next year.

Beyond a mere return, Gerard disclosed that ambitious plans are underway to elevate the tournament’s prestige.

“We are currently working with sponsors to organize a Gold Level tournament with a prize pool exceeding US$100,000 (approx. RM440,000),” Gerard stated.

The Evolution of the Malaysia Cup

Historically, the Malaysia Cup has been a Bronze Level event with a prize purse of US$50,000. Since its inception in 2023 in Seremban, followed by last year’s edition in Kuala Lumpur, the tournament has served as a key fixture for local fans.

Gerard emphasized that the Malaysia Cup is distinct from the prestigious Malaysian Open, which boasts a storied history dating back from 1975 to 2022.Eain Yow Ng & Amina Orfi win 2024 PSA ACE Malaysia Cup titles – UNSQUASHABLE

“The Malaysian Open is our premier tournament, while the Malaysia Cup is designed to be a championship at a smaller, supporting tier,” he explained.

Loss of a Local Showcase

Last year’s edition saw national ace Ng Eain Yow claim the men’s title, while women’s star S. Sivasangari finished as a runner-up. The absence of this tournament for the 2025/2026 season is a significant loss for local supporters who were eager to witness world-class squash action on home soil.
