Knicks Sweep Cavaliers to Reach First NBA Finals Since 1999

The New York Knicks are heading back to the NBA Finals for the first time in 27 years. Complete with a dominant 130-93 blowout victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night, the Knicks secured a 4-0 sweep in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference Finals and extended their team-record playoff win streak to 11 games.

Jalen Brunson was named the Eastern Conference Finals Most Valuable Player, averaging 25.5 points, 7.8 assists, and 3.3 rebounds across the series. The achievement carries a deep family connection for the star guard, who was just two years old when New York last reached the Finals in 1999—a team that featured his father, Rick Brunson, coming off the bench.

“It means a lot, but I wouldn’t be here without my teammates, the belief they had in me.They give me the confidence. They let me be me. Most importantly, we all believe in each other from top to bottom. It’s an honor to play with them.”

Brunson said after finishing with 15 points in the clinching game.

Blowout Triumph in Cleveland

The deciding Game 4 quickly turned into a rout. The Knicks broke the game open by closing the first quarter with an 8-0 run, followed by 12 unanswered points to start the second period, building an insurmountable 50-26 advantage.

New York capitalised heavily on defensive pressure, forcing 22 turnovers from the Cavaliers and turning them into 34 points.

Karl-Anthony Towns anchored the paint with a powerful double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds, while OG Anunoby added 17 points.

Reserve guard Landry Shamet provided a massive spark off the bench, scoring 16 points on a perfect four-of-four shooting performance from beyond the three-point arc.

“We’re going to enjoy it for a day or two but we’ve got a larger goal here and we’ve got to start locking in,” Shamet stated regarding the upcoming Finals. “We’ve got four more wins to try and go get and we know it’s going to be even harder. Being in this position with this team, it’s pretty special.”

Knicks head coach Mike Brown praised his team’s relentless competitive spirit and chemistry after the starters were pulled with over seven minutes left in the fourth quarter.

“Every single one of the guys on the team has sacrificed,” coach Brown said. “Every single one of the guys on the team has competitive spirit. Every single one of the guys on the team is connected. Every single one of the guys on the team believe in each other and the process and they all hold me and each other accountable.”

Shifting Focus to the Ultimate Goal

The sweep marks a massive turnaround for a franchise that struggled through two decades of rebuilding, missing the postseason 16 times between 2001 and 2022.

The arrival of Brunson in 2022 altered the trajectory of the team, culminating in this year’s historic run where all but one of their Eastern Conference Finals victories were by double digits.

For Cleveland, Donovan Mitchell led the way with 31 points, but the team was unable to recover from dropping a 22-point fourth-quarter lead back in Game 1.

“I’m disappointed for the group,” Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson admitted. “You want to fulfil your expectations. That was disappointing.”

The Knicks, who captured their only NBA championships in 1970 and 1973, now await the winner of the Western Conference Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs, which sits deadlocked at 2-2.

The NBA Finals are scheduled to tip off on Wednesday, June 3, with the Western Conference champion holding home-court advantage.
