National Wushu Squad Shines in Bulgaria with 24-Medal Masterclass at World Taijiquan Championships

The Malaysian national wushu squad delivered a commanding performance at the World Taijiquan Championships, amassing a total of 24 medals. Led by coach Loh Choon How, the team concluded the championship category with three gold, nine silver, and four bronze medals in the championship category.

Championship Category Success

The national team saw several standout individual performances during the tournament:

  • Lee Cheng Yang: Claimed gold in the men’s optional taijiquan (9.656) and secured silver in the men’s taijijian (9.333).
  • Wong Zi Hong: Clinched the men’s Yang style taijiquan title with a score of 9.370, defeating rivals from China.
  • Mandy Cebelle Chen: Completed the gold medal sweep in the women’s new standardised routines Yang style taijijian (9.313).
  • Other Medalists: Silver medals were contributed by Serene Teo, Kwan Yong Xin, Eason Yap, Carmen Chaw Jia Ming, and Lim Kai Shen, while additional bronze medals came from Cheng Yang, Zi Hong, and Eason.

Demonstration Category Dominance

In the demonstration category, Malaysia added five more gold medals, one silver, and one bronze to their haul.

  • Marcos Bong: Led the squad with three gold medals in the men’s Sun style taijiquan, Yang style taijijian, and taijiquan.
  • Rick Hooi Jone: Won two golds in the men’s Chen style taijijian and taijiquan.
  • Elson Chong: Secured a silver in the Chen style taijijian and a bronze in taijiquan.
