Uber Cup: Malaysia End 16-Year Drought to Clinch Quarter-Final Berth

The Malaysian women’s badminton squad has made history at Forum Horsens, securing a spot in the Uber Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 16 years. The momentous achievement was sealed following a dominant 5-0 sweep over South Africa in their second Group B encounter on Sunday.

This victory ensures Malaysia’s progression to the knockout stage for the first time since 2010, marking a significant resurgence for the national women’s team. Combined with their gritty 3-2 opening win against Turkiye, the squad has now guaranteed a top-two finish in the group.

National top singles player K. Letshanaa set the pace for the afternoon. The world No. 34 required only 22 minutes to dismantle South Africa’s Johanita Scholtz with a clinical 21-6, 21-10 victory, providing Malaysia with an immediate 1-0 lead.

Wong Ling Ching kept the momentum firmly in Malaysia’s favor, cruising past Chloe Lai 21-8, 21-4. The decisive moment fell to world No. 90 Siti Zulaikha Azmi, who officially punched Malaysia’s ticket to the quarter-finals by defeating Elme de Villiers 21-11, 21-5 in the third singles match.

Despite having already secured the tie, the Malaysian doubles pairs remained relentless. World No. 22 Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting faced some resistance but ultimately proved too strong for Amy Ackerman-Johanita Scholtz, winning 21-16, 21-14.

The rout was completed by the scratch pairing of Chong Jie Yu and Low Zi Yu, who made quick work of Elme de Villiers-Anri Schoonees with a 21-12, 21-5 result, ensuring a perfect scoreline for the national side.

With qualification secured, Malaysia’s finest hour in the Uber Cup—matching the quarter-final feats of 2004, 2008, and 2010—is now a reality. The team will face six-time champions Japan on Monday to determine who will finish as Group B winners.

It was a masterclass performance from start to finish:

K. Letshanaa (1st Singles)

Wong Ling Ching (2nd Singles)

Siti Zulaikha Azmi (3rd Singles – The winning point!)

Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting (1st Doubles)

Chong Jie Yu-Low Zi Yu (2nd Doubles)
