Former Sports Commissioner Datuk Zaiton Othman has sounded the alarm for Malaysia Athletics (MA), warning that the national body could face severe sanctions from World Athletics (WA) due to governance gaps and eligibility disputes involving its leadership.
Speaking at the launch of the Reform in Sports & Excellence (RISE) movement, Zaiton highlighted the misalignment between MA’s internal constitution and international regulations set by WA. The core issue revolves around MA President Karim Ibrahim’s eligibility, following a 2018 ban by the world governing body.
“Misalignment with international bodies can lead to sanctions, suspension, or loss of credibility. These consequences will ultimately burden our athletes, not administrators,” Zaiton emphasized.
The implications are particularly dire as Malaysia prepares to host the 2027 SEA Games. A sanction could potentially remove athletics—a sport with 37 gold medals at stake—from the competition program.

“I never thought I’d enjoy training this much until joining Sportif. The coaches are supportive and really know how to bring out the best in you.”
